Following
the opening of the exhibition, Proprietors & Adventurers:
A Rediscovery of Colonial New Jersey at Morven Museum and Garden,
the original documents purchased at Christie's will be closed to
public and press access for a period of several months, to allow
the State Archives' staff and professional conservators to identify
and address urgent stabilization and treatment needs, arrange for
photographic and digital recording and reproduction, and transcription.
Afterwards, the public will normally view facsimiles or digital
images of the documents for research.
The State Archives’
dual goal is to ensure the permanent preservation of these documentary
treasures for posterity, and—as soon as possible—to
provide the public convenient access to the information in them
for research and educational purposes.
The Archives requests
patience and understanding as we take the steps necessary to ensure
the preservation of a priceless piece of New Jersey’s history.
