Abstracts, 1776-1786

Included below are detailed abstracts of the 1776-1779 mortgages, containing at least the following information for each: name of mortgagor; place of residence; amount of principal; number of acres; type of property (if not described simply as a tract of land); location of land and any bodies of water mentioned; and bordering property owners and roads. The mortgage date has been noted on only the last six abstracts since the others are all dated 25 March 1776. In some cases, the abstract also includes: mortgagor's occupation; a note relative to the discharge of the mortgage (some as late as 1786); and/or references to previous owners, deeds or inheritance.

Most of the mortgages were witnessed by Samuel Shaw and Thomas Redman. Any witnesses other than these two men are noted at the end of the abstract. Also, unless the abstract includes a notation "[his mark]" or "[her mark]," it can be assumed that the mortgage is followed by the original signature of the mortgagor. In cases where the signature of the mortgagor differs from the spelling of the name used in the mortgage text, both variations are noted in the abstract, with the signature spelling shown first.

Finally, the proper spelling of municipal names has been used in the descriptions despite variations which may appear in the original (e.g., Galloway is used instead of "Galway"). However, names of local places and water courses have been transcribed as they were originally written (with [sic] used to denote a non-standard spelling).
