Content Note

Eight generations of the Craig family of Elizabethtown / Rahway, Essex Co. [later Linden Twp., Union Co.], NJ are documented in this series. Generally, the papers represent a single paternal lineage from the family's founder, Andrew Craig (who settled in Elizabethtown by 1708), as follows:

1.
  Andrew Craig (1662-1739)
2.
  John Craig (1695-1758)
3.
  Timothy Craig (1724-1800)
4.
  Dr. David Craig (1753-1781)
5.
  Dr. David Stewart Craig (1776-1865)
6.
  Washington H. Craig (born 1825)
7.
  children of Washington H. Craig
8.
  grandchildren of Washington H. Craig

Many of the papers relate to Dr. David S. Craig--especially to the debt owed to him by the estate of his step-father, John Marsh. The collection also includes documents relating to the allied families of Terrill, Anderson, Vreeland and Radcliffe, as well as several items dating from the 1870s concerning Arthur C. Danvers and Arthur Schirmacher (relationship to the Craig family unclear).

The papers were found at the Bayard W. and Ida M. Craig home, 30 Sayre Street, Elizabeth, which was purchased by Herman and Magdalena Herchet in the late 1930s. The collection was donated to the Archives in honor of the Herchets by their granddaughter, Kathleen L. Bourque. NOTE: A folder of research materials on the Craigs is also included at the beginning of the series.
