Content Note

While some material in this series dates from as early as the 1840s and as late as 1974, the majority of the correspondence is from the period after the acquisition of the canal by the state in 1923, to the 1930s.  In addition to correspondence, the files contain photographs, contracts and agreements (including canal dismantlement contracts), maps and blueprints, minutes, reports of the stockholders' annual meetings, court records, and public sales notices.  Of special note is folder #156, "Old Deeds," which contains lists of canal company deeds for Essex, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and Warren counties.  The files are arranged alphabetically by subject.
