Content Note

On 30 June 1871, the Pennsylvania Railroad Company (PRR) secured a 999-year lease of the properties of the United New Jersey Railroad and Canal Company, including the Delaware and Raritan Canal. This series consists of canal-related agreements entered into by PRR as lessee from 1874 to 1934, in which year the canal was taken over by the State of New Jersey. (Also included are two later agreements made by the New Jersey Department of Conservation and Development dated 1936 and 1940, #5-45 and #5-46).

Generally, the agreements pertain to crossings of water, gas, drain and sewer pipes, or electrical power and communication wires through canal properties by local utility companies, municipalities, private industry, and individuals. It is of special note that out of 264 agreements, 115 relate to crossings within the City of Trenton. Of the documents normally contained in the agreement files, perhaps the most valuable for historical research are the site plans found with the great majority of agreements. These are usually in the form of blueprints or photostats, but a few original vellum drawings can also be found.

Most of the agreements also include notations identifying the relevant canal tract and map numbers. However, because the tract numbers were not recorded consistently, because location descriptions are not always specific, and because agreements sometimes relate to tracts in more than one municipality, the series has not been organized by tract number. Rather, the agreements are arranged first into twelve basic regions, as follows:

Region Municipalities included # of Agmts.
1. Delaware Twp./Stockton Bor., Hunterdon Co. 11
2. City of Lambertville/West Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co. 21
3. Hopewell Twp., Mercer Co. 3
4. Ewing Twp., Mercer Co. 15
5. City of Trenton, Mercer Co. 115
6. Hamilton Twp., Mercer Co./City of Bordentown, Burlington Co. 4
7. Lawrence Twp., Mercer Co. 9
8. West Windsor Twp./Princeton Bor./Princeton Twp., Mercer Co. 9
9. Rocky Hill Bor./Montgomery Twp., Somerset Co. 5
10. Franklin Twp./East Millstone Town, Somerset Co. 27
11. Bound Brook Bor./South Bound Brook Bor., Somerset Co. 9
12. City of New Brunswick/Raritan Twp., Middlesex Co. 30

Within each region, the files have been numbered sequentially, in alphabetical order by the name of the second party, and thereunder by date.

The contents list below also includes reference to agreement numbers stamped or written on the document jackets, tract/map numbers when recorded, whether a plan is included (denoted with an asterisk [*] following the tract/map number), and a basic description of the subject of the agreement.

NOTE: Cross-references have been included for cases where agreements pertain to tracts in more than one region.
