Biographical Note

John Parr Snyder was born 12 April 1926 in Indianapolis, IN, the son of Ralph W. and Freda (Parr) Snyder. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University in 1948, and a Master of Science degree in chemical engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology the following year. In 1956, Mr. Snyder joined the CIBA-Geigy Corporation of Summit, NJ, as a chemical project engineer. He retired from full-time employment at CIBA-Geigy in 1978, and spent the following two years working part-time for that corporation and part-time as a physical scientist in map projection for the United States Geological Survey. In 1980, Mr. Snyder began full-time employment with the U.S.G.S., retiring to part-time employment with this agency in 1988.

Mr. Snyder is author of two publications especially vital to historical research in New Jersey. The first, The Story of New Jersey's Civil Boundaries, 1606-1968 (Trenton, NJ: New Jersey Bureau of Geology and Topography, 1969), won him the American Association for State and Local History award of merit in 1970. His second work, The Mapping of New Jersey: The Men and the Art (New Brunswick, NJ: Rutgers University Press, 1973) traces the history of New Jersey cartography and cartographers. Both books include reproductions of important historical maps of New Jersey, as well as numerous original depictions drafted by John Snyder himself. Mr. Snyder has also authored several other publications, and contributions to articles on map projection.
