Content Note

This series contains records related to the two brigades that made up the New Jersey National Guard between 1878 and 1917 and reflect the constant re-organization of the National Guard.

The records preserved in this series were sent by the brigades to the Adjutant General in Trenton. They consist primarily of Quarterly Returns and Returns of Annual Muster and Inspection of the brigades. The Quarterly Returns give either a consolidated report of the brigade, with information such as the number of men in each regiment under the brigade, or a report of the headquarters staff of the brigade over a three month span. The Return of Annual Muster and Inspection gives the number of men present at the Annual Muster of the various regiments, batteries, cavalries, and detachments that make up the brigade. These records give only the names of the headquarters staff, not the names of soldiers in the regiments.

The records are organized first by brigade, then by type of record, and then chronologically.
