Note
On
27 February 1911, a bill was proposed to repeal the charter of the Morris
Canal and Banking Company and to dispose of its property. A commission,
consisting of Governor Woodrow Wilson, Attorney General Edmund Wilson,
and Judge Bennet Van Syckel, recommended the abandonment of the canal
upon terms providing for the payment to the State of "only about
seven hundred thousand dollars" by the Lehigh Valley Railroad Co.
By Assembly Joint Resolution No. 11, passed 28 March 1912, it was resolved
that a 12-member committee be appointed to report on the extent, condition
and value of the property owned by the canal company, and to investigate
whether the company had forfeited its charter by reason of failure to
operate or maintain the canal. The committee was appointed in April and
the twelve men, along with other members of the legislature, toured the
canal by boat in July 1912. In 1914, the committee reported that the company
had not forfeited its charter; however, they recommended that the canal
be abandoned.
Records
of the Investigation Committee of 1912-1913 include correspondence, maps,
photographs, newspaper clippings, reports, and transcripts of the committee's
proceedings. The files also contain several writings of Hudson Maxim,
a local land owner who vigorously supported abandonment of the canal.
The "Miscellaneous records" file contains legislation, correspondence,
and reports, as well as documents relating to the case in chancery between
the Morris Canal and Banking Company and the Central Railroad Company
of New Jersey, 1863.
