New Jersey Archives, Third Series

An invaluable source for colonial and legal historians, the publication will also provide important material for students of social economic and religious history, because the laws cover all aspects of life in colonial New Jersey. Genealogists will need to consult the colonial naturalization acts and the many other private bills passed during the period. Lawyers, civil engineers and local officials will obtain important information on the establishment of roads, public works and old land boundaries.

Volume I: Minutes of the Governor's Privy Council, 1777-1789, edited by David A. Bernstein

During the revolutionary war, the Privy Council served as the chief advisory body to Governor William Livingston. Although the New Jersey Constitution of 1776 provided for a very weak executive branch of government, wartime demands soon led to the temporary emergence of the Privy Council as a strong and effective agency in enforcing militia acts, apprehending loyalists and supervising much of the government's everyday services. This volume is therefore an invaluable primary source for interpreting New Jersey's role in the political and military events of the revolutionary era.

Volumes II to V: Laws of the Royal Colony of New Jersey, 1703-1775, compiled with an introduction by      Bernard Bush; includes a comprehensive index.

Compiled from various archival and manuscript depositories, this edition includes the text of all but two of the royal colonial laws, making it the most complete ever published. The last volume contains a comprehensive index to all 2,200 pages of the laws.
