New Jersey State Archives Reference

The State Archives' public research rooms are open for business Monday-Friday (except for state holidays), 8:30am- 4:30pm. Manuscripts and other original archival records are retrieved from 8:30am - 12:00pm and 2:00pm - 4:00pm. The building is fully handicapped-accessible, but designated parking behind 225 West State Street is limited. The State House Parking Garage is currently closed to the public. Researchers should park on West State Street or in the War Memorial parking lot.

Eating, drinking and smoking are prohibited in the Archives' public areas (including the reception area). The following are not permitted in the State Archives' public research rooms: pens; briefcases, purses & waist pouches; portfolio cases & research file bins; zip notebooks; coats and umbrellas; luggage, bookbags and computer bags; strollers and diaper bags. Cellular phones/pagers must be set to vibrate mode (please take or make calls in the reception area). Secure lockers are provided for storage of personal items, the receptionist will provide locker keys.

Researchers can also obtain copies of documents through the mail from certain indexed collections. See Search Services and Fees below regarding collections that can be searched by mail.  Search and copy fees must be paid in advance.  The Archives will provide the best photocopy available.  We cannot guarantee image quality (due to the condition of the originals and the fact that most copying must be done from microfilm), and we cannot refund photocopy and search fees.

The New Jersey State Archives will search the following indexed collections and provide copies for the fees shown.

Birth, Marriage and Death Records

Marriage Records, 1666-1799

County Marriage Records for Burlington (1795-1878), Cumberland County (1795-1878), Essex County (1795-1879), Mercer County (1832-1887) (gaps), Passaic County (1838-1878), Somerset County (1795-1878), Sussex County (1795-1878), Union Co. (1857-1878)

  • $5.00 per record; requests must include the husband’s and wife’s names and an approximate date of marriage.

Birth, Marriage, and Death records dating May 1848-May 1878 (For more recent records, contact Bureau of Vital Statistics at 609.292.4087)

  • $10.00 for one record searched in up to five years; $10.00 for each additional five years (Vital Record Search Request Form). Please send a separate check and letter for May 1848-May 1878 vital records request. To find and order copies of a marriage record for the 1848-1867 period, consult the searchable Index to Marriage Records, 1848-1867.
Land and Estate Records

Wills and Estate Inventories 1670-1952

  • $5.00 per packet (up to 10 pages); provide the name of the deceased, approximate death date, and county or major city of residence.  Include file number, if known.

Secretary of State's Deeds, Surveys and Commissions, ca. 1650-1785

  • $5.00 per deed; provide the name of the grantor and grantee, location (county), and approximate year.

East and West Jersey Proprietors' Surveys, 1680s-early 1900s

  • $5.00 per record; provide book and page citation, names of parties, and approximate date and location of land.
Military Service Records

Revolutionary War, 1793 MIlitia Census, Wars of 1794-1815, and Mexican War (1846-1848)

  • $5.00 per record; provide soldier's name; (records of militia, wars of 1794-1812, and Mexican War copied from published transcriptions).

Civil War

  • $10.00 per record; provide name, company, and regiment

Spanish-American War and National Guard

  • $5.00 per record; provide name, company, and regiment

World War I

  • $5.00 each for a soldier's unofficial service record; provide name, county or major city of residence, and age.
  • $5.00 fee for a photocopy of soldier's death information card and photograph (if included); may be available for soldiers who died while serving in WWI.
Legislative Records

Inventories of Damages by the British and Americans in New Jersey, 1776-1782

Naturalizations (Citizenship Papers)

State-Level Naturalizations (by the Supreme Court, Chancery Court, Prerogative Court and Legislature) all counties, 1750s-1830s.

  • $5.00 per record; provide name, county, and approximate year; almost all are men because women obtained citizenship through their husbands.

County-Level Naturalizations (Court of Common Pleas) for Burlington (1790-1956), Camden (1844-1923), Essex (1792-1931), Mercer (1838-1930), Ocean (1850-1951), Sussex (1817-1958), & Union counties (1845-1931). For all other counties please contact the local county clerk.

  • $5.00 per record; provide name, county, and approximate year; almost all are men because women obtained citizenship through their husbands.

Tax and Census Records

Tax Ratables, 1772-1822

  • The Archives does not provide a search service for these records.

U.S. Census Records, 1830-1930

  • $5.00 per record; copy of entry sent when page citation is provided.
