Gloucester County - Surrogate's Office

The Gloucester court was established in the Province of West Jersey in 1686; the boundary between Gloucester and Burlington counties was first set up in 1692.

The county was re-formed by the union of the third and fourth Tenths of West Jersey on 17 May 1694. Portions of the original Gloucester County became Atlantic (1837) and Camden (1844) counties.

Recording of wills and estate inventories at the county level began in 1804. Orphans Courts were established in 1785. Consult the Secretary of State page linked below for original estate records for the 1660s-1900 period.

The State Archives' holdings vary from county to county. Consult the Collecting Policy for additional information about our accessioning guidelines.
