Hunterdon County - Surrogate's Office

Hunterdon County was formed from the northern portion of original Burlington County on 11 March 1714. Consult the Burlington County page linked below for pre-1714 records.

The northern portions of original Hunterdon County were set off as Morris County in 1739. The southern portion became part of present-day Mercer County in 1838.

Recording of wills and estate inventories at the county level began in 1804. Orphans Courts were established in 1785. Consult the Secretary of State page linked below for original estate records for the 1660s-1900 period.

The State Archives' holdings vary from county to county. Consult the Collecting Policy for additional information about our accessioning guidelines.
