Department of Institutions & Agencies (Human Services) - Trenton Psychiatric Hospital
The State Lunatic Asylum at Trenton was founded in 1848 as a direct result of the efforts of mental health pioneer Dorothea Lynde Dix. It was the first such institution in New Jersey, and one of the earliest psychiatric hospitals in the United States.
In 1893, the Asylum's name was changed to the State Hospital at Trenton. It operates today as Trenton Psychiatric Hospital. Researchers should note that patient registers and records disclosing the delivery of mental health care are subject to statutory privacy restrictions.
